Custom Order: Part 1
So this order called for some thick cardboard since i would need the thickness for an inlay you can see later on...
The design of this guy called for a small piece to be sculpted out of polymer clay. The basic form was sculpted then baked.
after baking more details were carved out and a bit of sanding was done to give it a smoother surface...
Out of a thinner cardboard the outline of the figure was cut out....
This would give it a small ledge for the polymer piece to hold on to...
Next came cutting down the inlay texture...This one had a corrugated trapezoidal texture to it...
The thicker cardboard pieces were then glued onto a full size piece of cardboard as a background and this would also serve as support for all the pieces...
once all the cardboard pieces were glued in place came adding some texture to the covers...
This was done using a wood burners...
Finally the blackwash to make it all look lovely! !
Sometime along the previous steps came the formatting of what would be printed on the pages. These included a cover page, lined pages, and charts that would go towards the back of the book...
After staining the pages it was time to get the faux leather ready for sowing...This book in this case would be sown using a long stitch with a chain variation...
After testing out various glueing methods that didn't glue the faux leather to the book covers completely, i decided to go with sowing a thin piece of cloth to the flanks of the leather...
The cloth was then glued to the covers and left to dry overnight...

I really like the polymer clay inset piece! There a so many ways of using that technique. Also, what did you use for the corrugate material? It looks like real metal.
ReplyDeleteHi! The material is an actual sample of a wallpaper used for interior walls. You can find many types of textures on wallpaper samples that I've found useful on a couple of projects. If you do a bit of a search online for free wallpaper or other type of material samples you can get some neat stuff for free!
